Golfweek magazine has also recognized The Dunes Club in their March 12 edition. Among the publication’s annual golf rankings called, “Golfweek’s Best,” The Dunes Club ranks 100th nationally among “classic” golf courses constructed before 1960. It also rates 94th in the country among resort golf courses, and fifth among golf courses in the state of South Carolina.
The Dunes Club golf course was built in 1947 and is recognized as one of Robert Trent Jones finest designs. Hole 13, better known as “Waterloo” is The Dunes Club’s signature hole and has been honored by GOLF Magazine and Sports Illustrated as one of the greatest golf holes in the world. | Dunes Named to GolfWorld's Top 50 | | Posted 10/6/2009 | | The Dunes Golf & Beach Club was named to the 2010 Golf World Readers’ Choice Awards, just announced in the magazine’s September 28 issue. The Robert Trent Jones design was recognized in the Top 50 Resorts category and is the only Myrtle Beach area course to be honored in this category in the annual ranking. Dunes Club was also honored in the inaugural 2009 Reader’s Choice Awards.
“We are excited to once again be recognized as one of the top 50 resort golf courses in the United States,” said Dennis Nicholl, Dunes Club’s head golf professional. “We strive to provide a superior golfing experience to our members and guests and this award confirms our success at this objective.”
Golf World invited readers to evaluate the best public, private and resort facilities in the country using 12 criteria established by the magazine’s editors that included the quality of the course; the condition of the course; the course’s reputation and prestige; golf practice facilities; speed of play; clubhouse/locker rooms; hotel accommodations; caddie program; golf pro shop; food/dining; off-course activities/amenities; service and overall value. More than 48,000 individual facility ratings and 600,000 criteria evaluations were received in the second year of the reader’s choice awards.
To arrive at an overall aggregate score for each facility, Golf World calculated the average ratings received in all applicable criteria. The raw scores were weighted to reflect different levels of significance for each of the criteria, with the formula varying based on the category. The overall total then was recalculated to a 100-point scale so a perfect score on every ballot yielded an aggregate of 100.

| Dunes Named to Golf Digest Top 100 | | Posted 4/26/2009 | | THE DUNES GOLF AND BEACH CLUB NAMED ONE OF GOLF DIGEST’S “AMERICA’S 100 GREATEST PUBLIC COURSES”
April 21, 2009, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Dunes Golf and Beach Club has been ranked number 38 in Golf Digest’s 2009-2010 “America’s Top 100 Great Public Courses” listing, just published in the April issue. The prestigious “Top 100 You Can Play” list is published biennially and ranks America’s best public access and resort courses. Although a private club, the Dunes Club qualifies for this list of the country’s top public and resort golf courses by allowing limited package play through member hotels and package providers.
Established in 1966, the 2009-2010 Golf Digest ranking is the 23rd edition of the ultimate honor paid to American golf course architecture. The rankings are based on extensive play and scrutiny of thousands of courses every two years by a panel of over 900 low handicap golfers. The courses were judged on various criteria: shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience. After the panelists submitted their evaluations, Golf Digest averages the scores of the categories and totals the averages to determine the overall rankings. A course must be two years old to be considered for “America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses.”
“It's an honor for The Dunes Club to be recognized as one of ‘America's Top 100’ courses,” said Dennis Nicholl, Dunes Club head golf professional. “This Robert Trent Jones’ design continues to stand the test of time as one of the best courses in the United States and I congratulate our staff for their hard work to make sure that our members and guests have a first-class experience each time.”

Over the years, the Dunes has maintained its position as Myrtle Beach's Highest-Rated golf course and continues to be recognized as one of "America's Greatest 100 Courses" by many publications including Golf Magazine, Golf Digest, Golfweek, Links Magazine and many others. Hole 13, nicknamed "Waterloo", has received much attention having been chosen by Golf Digest and Sports Illustrated as one of "America's Best 18 Holes". The course has played host to two USGA National Championships and Six Senior Tour Championships. In December 2003, The Dunes Golf and Beach Club reopened after an extensive greens restoration project which resulted in the installation of A-1 bent greens. The project was led by Rees Jones, the prominent golf course architect of his generation, and also included minor alterations to the 1st, 8th, 13th, 16th, and 18th greens, which allow them to remain consistent with the design's original intent and handle the increased speed of the A-1bentgrass. Golf Professional Dennis Nicholl and his staff welcome you to The Dunes. Enjoy the day on one of America's finest tests of golf. |
